BuildN is an online platform that connects contractors with clients
BUILDN

overview
Contractors often struggle to network and build relationships due to time constraints on job sites. Given the importance of first impressions in the construction industry, it’s crucial to establish credibility and trust quickly.
Leveraging online platforms and social media can help contractors overcome these challenges by connecting with potential clients and showcasing their work.

objective
The owners tasked me to redesign the contractor’s profile as they weren’t happy with its visual appearance.
UNderstanding Contractors and their clients
Target Audience Demographics
Men, ages 20-60 years old
Significant portion are older with years of experience, but there is also a growing number of younger individuals entering the construction trades
Educational background varies from high school diplomas to vocational training and college degrees, and many learning their craft through formal apprenticeship programs
User Research and Affinity Mapping
I conducted user research by interviewing contractors connected to me by owners. I, then, created an affinity map to categorize similar observations, helping to highlight key issues shared by contractors.

Ideation
The initial two-column design had a significant limitation in terms of scalability. As the number of projects increased, the bottom left column would become increasingly empty, leading to wasted screen space. To optimize space utilization and improve content density, I transitioned to a row-based layout.
I sketched different solutions on paper for the two sections — contact information and projects.

Takeaways
Continuous improvement
While these updates improved usability, future iterations could further refine the experience, such as adding a section for contractor certifications and licenses to increase credibility.
